Horse racing has its own language — each-way, places, forecasts, the going — but the basics are simple. You back a horse to win or to finish in the places, and the odds tell you the payout. This guide explains the main bet types, how to read a racecard, and the step-by-step to your first bet.
Horse racing bet types
| Bet | What you're backing | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Win | Horse to win the race | Beginner |
| Each-way | Win + place (two bets in one) | Beginner |
| Place | Horse to finish in the places (e.g. top 3) | Beginner |
| Forecast | First two in correct order | Advanced |
| Reverse forecast | First two in either order | Advanced |
| Tricast | First three in correct order | Advanced |
| Ante-post | Future race (e.g. the Derby) weeks out | Intermediate |
Each-way, explained
A $10 each-way bet = $20 total
$10 goes on the win, $10 on the place. If your horse wins, both parts pay (the place part at a fraction of the odds — commonly 1/4 or 1/5). If it only places (finishes in the top few), the win part loses but the place part pays. Each-way suits bigger-priced runners you expect to run well without necessarily winning. The number of places paid depends on the field size.
Reading the racecard & the odds
- Form figures — recent finishing positions (e.g. 1-2-1) next to each horse.
- The going — ground condition (firm, good, soft, heavy); some horses prefer specific going.
- Distance & class — is the horse proven at today's trip and grade?
- Odds — shown fractional (5/1) by default; switch to decimal (6.00) in settings. Shorter odds = more fancied.
- Jockey & trainer — strong stable/jockey form is a real signal.

Beginner racing tips
- Use each-way on bigger prices (roughly 5/1+) where a place return is realistic.
- Respect the going — a horse out of form may simply dislike today's ground.
- Avoid huge-field handicaps early — too many variables; stick to smaller, clearer races.
- Keep stakes small and bet responsibly.

How to bet on horse racing — FAQ
How many places does each-way pay?
It depends on the field size and race type — commonly the top 2–4. The racecard shows the each-way terms (places and the fraction) before you bet.
What's the minimum racing bet?
The equivalent of about $1 USD in your local currency (remember each-way doubles the total stake).
Can I bet on big races like the Derby in advance?
Yes — that's ante-post betting. You lock in a price early, but the stake is usually lost if your horse doesn't run.
