What is esports betting?
eSports betting is placing a real-money bet on the outcome of a competitive video-game match — Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, League of Legends, Valorant and more. It works exactly like sports betting: the bookmaker prices each outcome with odds, you pick a market, stake an amount, and get paid if your prediction is right. The only new part is the games themselves — and you only need to learn one to get started.
Almost every pro esports match is a best-of series: Bo1 (single map/game), Bo3 (first to 2) or Bo5 (first to 3) in finals. That structure drives the markets below.
The two markets to start with
| Market | What you're betting | Level |
|---|---|---|
| Match-winner (series) | Which team wins the Bo3 / Bo5 | Beginner |
| Total maps Over/Under | More/fewer maps than the line (2.5 in a Bo3) | Beginner |
| Map winner | Who wins one specific map/game | Intermediate |
| Map handicap (±1.5) | Favourite to win 2-0, or underdog +1.5 | Intermediate |
| Total kills (Dota 2 / LoL) | Combined kills above/below a line | Intermediate |
| First blood / pistol round | First kill (MOBA) or round 1 (shooter) | Advanced / fun |
Begin with the match-winner: just pick the team that wins the series. Add total maps Over/Under once you can judge how close two teams really are. Leave handicaps and prop markets until you know one game well.
How esports odds work
Odds are shown in decimal format. The number is your total return per unit staked, including your stake:
- 1.45 — a $10 bet returns $14.50 ($4.50 profit). A short price = a favourite.
- 1.90 — roughly an even matchup; $10 returns $19.
- 2.80 — an underdog; $10 returns $28 if it lands.
Lower odds mean a more likely outcome (and smaller payout). New to reading prices? See how to read betting odds for decimal, fractional and implied-probability conversions, or use the odds converter.
Worked example — your first match-winner bet
Say two CS2 teams play a Bo3. The favourite is priced 1.45, the underdog 2.70. You back the favourite for $10. If they win the series 2-0 or 2-1, the bet settles at $14.50 ($4.50 profit). If they lose, you lose the $10. That is the whole market — you are only predicting who wins the series, not the maps or rounds.
Two quick checks before you place it: the 1.45 implies about a 69% chance (1 ÷ 1.45) — ask yourself if the favourite really wins roughly 7 times in 10 here. And remember the format: in a Bo1 upset risk is higher than the same teams in a Bo5. If the price feels too short, the total maps Over 2.5 (the series goes to a deciding map 3) is often better value on two evenly-matched teams.

Pick a game to learn first
The fastest way to improve is to learn one title in depth. Each guide covers that game's markets, odds and a beginner-friendly strategy:
- CS2 betting — the biggest market; map and round bets, simple to follow.
- Dota 2 betting — first blood, total kills and big comebacks.
- Valorant betting — tactical shooter, close to CS2 in structure.
- League of Legends betting — kills, dragons and barons around Worlds and MSI.
Beginner esports betting tips
- Start with the match-winner on Tier-1 tournaments, where the lines are sharpest and form is most reliable.
- Bet recent form, not reputation — esports metas shift fast; a team that won last month isn't automatically favourite now.
- Check rosters — a single stand-in can drop a team's level sharply. Liquipedia and HLTV list last-minute changes.
- Keep prop bets small — first blood and pistol rounds are fun but loosely tied to who wins.
- Learn one game before chasing deep markets in five.
- Always bet responsibly and within a set budget.

How to bet on eSports — FAQ
What is esports betting?
eSports betting means placing real-money bets on the results of competitive video-game matches — CS2, Dota 2, League of Legends, Valorant and more. It works the same way as sports betting: you pick a market (such as the match-winner), the bookmaker sets odds, and you win if your prediction is correct.
How does esports betting work for a beginner?
Choose a tournament match, pick a simple market like the series match-winner, check the decimal odds (e.g. 1.45 means a $10 bet returns $14.50), add it to your bet slip, enter a stake and confirm. Most esports matches are a best-of series (Bo3 or Bo5), so the match-winner is the team that wins the most maps/games.
What is the easiest esports bet for beginners?
The series match-winner — you simply pick which team wins the Bo3 or Bo5. It is the most-bet esports market and the easiest to understand. Total maps Over/Under (2.5 in a Bo3) is a good second market once you are comfortable.
Which esports games can I bet on?
On 1xBet you can bet on CS2 (Counter-Strike 2), Dota 2, League of Legends, Valorant, plus Rainbow Six, Call of Duty, Rocket League, FIFA and regional MOBAs. CS2 and Dota 2 carry the most markets and the highest betting volume.
Do I need to understand the game to bet on esports?
Not for the basics — anyone can bet the match-winner by following team form and rankings. But understanding the game (map pools in CS2/Valorant, the draft in Dota 2/LoL) is where the edge is on deeper markets like map handicaps and total kills. Start simple, then learn one title in depth.
Is esports betting eligible for the 1xBet welcome bonus?
Yes. eSports selections at odds of 1.40 or higher count toward the 5× accumulator wagering on the VIP4YOU welcome bonus, exactly like any other sport. Tier-1 tournaments run many matches per day, so a 3-leg accumulator is easy to build.
What is a map handicap in esports betting?
A map handicap gives one team a virtual head start in maps. In a best-of-three, "−1.5 maps" means the favourite must win 2-0 for the bet to land; "+1.5 maps" means the underdog wins the bet if they take at least one map (the series reaches a deciding map 3). It is the esports version of a points handicap — handy when a strong favourite's match-winner price is too short, or to back an underdog with a buffer.
